So I know that Art Basel Miami was sooooo last year. But in light of the Dallas Art Fair this weekend, I thought it would be interesting to reflect on the event. It could be fun to compare, maybe we will see some similar trends? Even Paper City couldn’t resist the urge to compare the two! Oh, and not to mention I can finally use some great material I have been storing since back in December when I asked some experts their thoughts on Art Basel ~ here is what they had to say:
Name: Chelsea Neman Profession: Artist
Did you notice any trends among the galleries and/ or art that was shown this year at art basel? I noticed a big emphasis on artist emerging from Mexico, aside Gabriel Orozco, there were others making their mark like Moris Israel Meza Moreno, who caught my attention.
What was your favorite booth? The entire convention center was a dream come true. it held so many of the greatest pieces and artists I have admired for so long, I don’t think I could choose a favorite. Did you see/ do anything unexpected or surprising? it could be art, someone you met, a party you attended, etc ?Given our recession I was surprised to see that many little red stickers. But Eli Broad did say, “spirits are very good, especially given the economy.” I was particularly pleased to see the hustle between the artists and collectors in the Latin American Booths.
If you could take home one piece of art for your personal collection which piece would it be? Robert Longo had a series of large scale drawings ( Untitled) the one I fell inlove with was 3 or 4 panels each 120x210 inches a charcoal drawing of the forest with beams of light shining through. If I could I would build a wall in my house just for this drawing ($600,000)
Name: Laura Trelford Profession: Abraaj Capital Art Prize & Education Manager, Art Dubai co-founder Thinking Cloud: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAxh13CE1BM
Did you notice any trends among the galleries and/ or art that was shown this year at art basel? For me the most interesting thing to see were artists from latin America,as this is something I rarely come across in Europe, and definitely not in Dubai.
What was your favorite booth? That is such difficult question! Being a fan of new art production coming out of the Middle East I would have to give my support for The Third Line. Also, great work by Kader Attia and others at Goodman Gallery from Cape Town. Victoria Miro, Lisson and Pace were my favourite top-end stand.
Did you see/ do anything unexpected or surprising? The performance by Rikit Tiravanija at the W was quite eye-opening.
If you could take home one piece of art for your personal collection which piece would it be? Galerie Urs Meile had an amazing Ai Weiwei and Edward Houk had my favourite Man Ray of Peggy Guggenheim.
