Creative Time, A NYC based non profit arts organization, came to tour Dallas Contemporary last friday and chat with directors and board members about the role of Dallas Contemporary in developing the arts community in Dallas.  Creative Time is a well respected organization creating art in public spaces for over 30 years.  They are winners of the inaugural Meadows prize and were in Dallas as part of a three day visit with local artists, collectors, gallery owners, etc in efforts to create a master-plan for the arts in Dallas.  This is especially exciting considering the avant-garde nature of Creative Time.  They are the exact energy Dallas needs to develop the arts and take our community to the next international arts level.

Director of Creative Time, Anne Pasternak, posed several questions to our director in order to gain a better understanding of the arts in Dallas.

What do you see as opportunities to grow young artists in Dallas?

Since Dallas Contemporary, physically can not alone serve every artists, what else is emerging recently to help artists?

How does the Curatorial process work @ Dallas Contemporary?

How can the Dallas Contemporary help to grow an artist’s community?

responses were sincere and colloquial, the dialogue flowed, here are some quotes from the discussions

“We in Dallas like things cooked, our space is raw”

“It was a very gusty thing to do in Dallas”

“We hope to foster the three T’s; Talent, Technology, and Texture”

“This is a place for artists to come and have a dialogue”

Among points established, it was agreed upon by all parties that Dallas needs a stronger artists community.  Talks about weekly artists dinners, artists summits, and other engaging activities were warmly welcomed.

The future of the arts in Dallas Looks bright! We are developing infrastructure and strengthening our communities.  With the guidance from institutions like Creative Time, hopefully we can burst our conservative bubble and take some more risks!!
